IPSIM-Cirsium, a Qualitative Expert-Based Model to Predict Infestations of Cirsium arvense

نویسندگان

چکیده

Throughout Europe, Cirsium arvense is the most problematic perennial weed in arable crops, whether managed under organic or conventional agriculture. Non-chemical control methods are limited with partial efficacy. Knowledge missing on their effect across a wide gradient of cropping systems and pedoclimates. To achieve effective management ensuring crop productivity while limiting reliance herbicide, expert-based models needed to gather knowledge individual levers interactions order (i) design assess finely tuned combinations farming practices different pedoclimates (ii) support decisions for control. Based expert-knowledge literature, we developed IPSIM- , hierarchical qualitative model which evaluates infestation as function practices, climate conditions, soil descriptors interactions. multi-attribute considering all possibilities between factors, it estimates rate field graded according four-level scale. The outputs were confronted independent observations collected 6 fields, over 16-year period 3 sites. showed satisfactory predictive quality (accuracy 78.2%). IPSIM-Cirsium can be used tool advisors researchers assist less reliant herbicides, farmers advisers ex-ante prototypes systems, teachers an educational share agroecological knowledge.

Establishing systemic rust infections in Cirsium arvense in the field

An existing method to induce systemic rust infections in creeping thistles (Cirsium arvense) using an insect vector, the weevil Ceratapion onopordi, was successfully applied in the field. Urediniospores of Puccinia punctiformis were experimentally transmitted to naturally grown thistles, to our knowledge for the first time resulting in systemically infected shoots in an established thistle popu...

Fungal Phytotoxins for Control of Cirsium arvense and Sonchus arvensis

Perennial weeds, including Cirsium arvense and Sonchus arvensis, are a common problem in crop fields, especially in agricultural systems with reduced herbicide usage. Herbicides recommended for control of these perennials generally are restricted to only a few active ingredients that tend to have low selectivity, especially on dicot crops. Microbial phytotoxins or their synthetic analogues may ...

Enhancing incidence of Puccinia punctiformis, through mowing, to improve management of Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense)

Biological control of Canada thistle using Puccinia punctiformis has been largely unsuccessful in part due to a low incidence of systemically infected shoots and heterogeneous distribution of teliospores in the soil. The present study investigated the feasibility of strategic mowing to improve incidence of systemically infected shoots, and enhance intraand/or inter-season disease development in...
